Why did you choose Baptist?
Baptist’s PGY1 covered everything I was interested in as an incoming resident: an Infectious Diseases or Antimicrobial Stewardship elective, a Critical Care elective, an advanced form of either elective, and a sufficient number of beds. Additionally, when I interviewed, I saw just how strong a bond the pharmacy personnel shared with one another, and I felt a genuine connection with several of the preceptors.

What is your favorite thing about Southaven?
I love the variety of restaurants and shops to explore. The history is rich here, too.

Why did you choose pharmacy as a career?
Since I was a kid, I have always been interested in medicine and how it affects the body. I used to go to the local nursery and pick out plants so I could read about their medicinal properties. Eventually, I realized that pharmacy focused on this area heavily, so I decided to pursue it as a career.

Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
The preceptors are kind, engaging, and passionate about their field. Everyone in the pharmacy is kind and welcoming. Also, the hospital offers a teaching service with medical residents. It is a fantastic place for new pharmacists to hone their skills, and I would absolutely recommend it.

Firas Quran, PharmD

PGY1 Resident

Firas Quran

Undergraduate degree
Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences; Baptist Health Sciences University; Memphis, TN; 2018

Pharmacy degree
Doctor of Pharmacy; Union University College of Pharmacy; Jackson, TN; 2022

About Firas
Firas was born and raised in Al-Bireh, Palestine. He moved to Germantown, Tennessee when he was six years old. He is interested in cardiology and critical care and plans on pursuing a PGY-2. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with family and visiting Shelby Farms Park when weather permits.

Why did you choose Baptist?
The PGY-1 residency program at Baptist offers a variety of rotations, supportive preceptors and mentors, and several learning opportunities. I knew I wanted to be a resident at Baptist after completing rotations there as a student pharmacist.

What is your day like?
In general a typical day would consist of various pharmacy specific consults. These consults range from preparing antibiotic regimens, determining optimal anticoagulation dosing, and/or preparing TPN orders. In addition to consults, we actively review patient profiles to ensure patient safety is top priority. Depending on the rotation, most days would be spent rounding and collaborating with other health care team members.

What is your favorite thing about Southaven?
The food.

Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
If applicants are looking for a progressive practice environment surrounded by a group of preceptors who are invested in the development of their residents, look no further.

About Michaela
Michaela is from the small town of Ashland, Mississippi. Her areas of interest include internal medicine, cardiology, and critical care. Her goal after residency is to obtain a position as an inpatient clinical pharmacist. In her spare time, Michaela enjoys traveling, shopping, playing with her two dogs, and spending time with friends and family at Pickwick Lake.

Why did you choose Baptist?
I completed a rotation at Baptist during my fourth year of pharmacy school and quickly saw how knowledgeable and friendly the staff here is. I knew Baptist Desoto offered a diverse patient population, many clinical specialists to learn from, and valuable experiences in my areas of interest. After talking with all of the staff during my interview, I knew for sure that Baptist Desoto was the perfect fit for me!.

What is your day like?
Days in residency look different depending on the rotation, but I generally arrive at the hospital early to study or get work done before rotation-specific activities like working up patients, going on rounds, participating in topic discussions, and staffing in the central pharmacy. Juggling all of the daily responsibilities can be challenging, but very rewarding when you see your work make a positive impact on a patient.

What is your favorite thing about Southaven?
The food and the shopping.

Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
Baptist Desoto maintains a friendly, tight-knit community atmosphere while also being large enough to offer unique experiences and interesting patient cases. The staff provide excellent mentorship and are genuinely interested in you, both personally and professionally. Baptist Desoto’s residency program is challenging, yet supportive, and helps new pharmacists build the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to provide exceptional patient care.
